Bone metabolism

Bone metabolism describes all biological processes involved in synthesis and degradation of bone tissue as well as in adequate supply of the bone cells. Bone tissue is continuously remodelled to meet the functional needs of the organism. Bone cells secrete organic material that is finally mineralized. The most important hormones that influence bone metabolism are parathormon, calcitriol and calcitonin. They control the activity of the bone cells and the mineralization of the matrix. Furthermore estrogens, glucocorticoides and somatotropin play a central role. Calcium, phosphate,vitamin D, osteocalcin and the above mentioned hormones are the most important parameters that are measured for diagnostic purposes.
